Well, you can estimate your sleep state to some extent based on your heart rate alone. However, EEG directly measures brain waves and distinguishes between sleep stages like deep sleep, light sleep, and REM sleep.

EMG measures muscle movement and can also detect tossing and turning or sleep talking. ECG can also monitor heart rate variability, allowing for a more accurate assessment of sleep quality.

Oh, so if you use them together, you can see your sleep patterns more precisely. But you also said that they measure breathing. What does that mean?

Yes, breathing patterns are important. If you experience apnea or irregular breathing during sleep, it can affect your heart rate and muscle activity. If the ExG device also monitors breathing, it can detect problems like sleep apnea more quickly.

Wow… So with just this one wearable, you can almost completely monitor your sleep. But you also said it provides real-time feedback.

Does that mean you can actually get that information while you’re awake?

Yes. Most of them connect to a smartphone app, so they either display a sleep report in the morning or store real-time data during sleep for later analysis.

Some high-end models can even provide guidance on improving sleep quality through vibrations or notifications.
