How do we address the high cost and accessibility issues of in-body wearables, and what are the ways to make sure that more patients benefit?

In-body wearable devices present innovative possibilities in disease diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring, but their high cost and limited access remain big barriers. Let’s look at the ways to make sure that more patients benefit from these high-tech devices from various aspects.

Technology and Functionality:

  • Various forms of on-body wearables are being developed, such as smart clothing, patches, and accessories. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each form, and which forms are best suited for specific applications?
  • For skin-attached sensors, how are factors directly related to user comfort, such as adhesion, breathability, and water resistance, being improved? How are issues like skin irritation from long-term wear being addressed?
  • How far can the types of biosignals measurable by on-body wearables (heart rate, body temperature, sweat, EMG, etc.) be expanded? What are the future directions of sensor technology for measuring these signals?
  • How are algorithms and AI technologies for real-time analysis of collected biosignals and providing useful information to users developing? What are the data utilization strategies for providing personalized health management services?
  • Please explain the current status and future development directions of power supply methods (batteries, energy harvesting, etc.) for on-body wearables. I’m particularly interested in the technological efforts to address long-term use and the inconvenience of battery replacement.

  • What is the potential for using on-body wearables for remote patient monitoring, chronic disease management, and rehabilitation training? Could you provide examples of actual applications and their effectiveness in medical settings?

I saw the Q&A list you posted about wearables, and I have so many questions. In particular, InBody mentioned wireless power transmission. Is that feasible? Isn’t that still a distant dream?

It used to be in the research phase, but some medical implants are currently testing wireless charging using magnetic induction. However, before it can be fully commercialized, issues like heat generation, safety, and efficiency need to be resolved.

Oh… and regarding the on-body sensors attached to the skin, there were issues with itching or rashes if left on for long periods of time. Has that technology improved significantly?

Yes, they’ve gotten much better recently thanks to breathable hydrogels and hypoallergenic adhesives. They’re even focusing on sweat-wicking and waterproofing, making them more wearable for everyday use.

That’s possible. Some wearables already combine heart rate, sleep patterns, and activity data to recommend personalized exercise and diet recommendations. In the future, they’ll be able to link with hospital data to predict medical needs.
