Common Sensors Used in Wearables for Environmental Data Measurement

Sensor Type Use Example Products
Gas Sensors Measures gas concentrations such as CO2, CO, methane, and NOx to monitor air quality. Aeroqual, Figaro Gas Sensors
Particulate Matter Sensors Measures particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10) in the air to evaluate air pollution. Plantower PMS5003, Aeroqual Series 200
Temperature & Humidity Sensors Measures environmental temperature and humidity in real-time. Bosch BME680, Honeywell HIH Series
UV Sensors Measures UV intensity to help users manage UV exposure. L’Oréal My Skin Track UV, UVM-30 UV Sensor
Sound/Noise Sensors Measures noise levels in the environment to assess sound pollution. Brüel & Kjær Noise Sensors, Sensirion SGM6xx
Light Sensors Measures ambient light intensity to assess brightness or lighting conditions. TSL2561 Light Sensor, AMS TCS3200
Barometric Pressure Sensors Measures atmospheric pressure to predict weather changes and detect altitude variations. Bosch BMP280, Honeywell HPA Series
Accelerometers Detects movement patterns or changes in position to track environmental interactions. STMicroelectronics LSM303D, Bosch BNO055

These sensors enable wearables to collect various environmental data, helping users to monitor and adjust to their surroundings, ensuring both safety and comfort.

Hey, author, I saw this article about a wearable environmental sensor. It says it can measure CO2 and fine dust in real time? Does that mean I can actually know the air quality right away?

Yes. The gas sensor checks for air pollutants like CO2, CO, and NOx, and the fine dust sensor can monitor PM2.5 and PM10 in real time. If the product has a real-time alarm function, it can notify you immediately when dangerous levels are reached.

Oh, so can you check things like temperature, humidity, and UV rays simultaneously? That would be really useful when exercising.

Yes! There are many products that include temperature/humidity sensors, UV sensors, and even light sensors, so you can check the weather, sunlight intensity, and ambient brightness while outdoors. It’s also helpful for managing your stamina while exercising.

Finally, what about noise and air pressure? Are they just for fun, or are they useful in real life?

The noise sensor can check the ambient noise level, and the wind/air pressure sensor can detect weather changes and altitude. These are features that help with safety and environmental adaptation when hiking or traveling. They’re not just for fun; they’re practical.
